• 'The New Normal' (27 April 2020)

    PROCESS NOTES

    Inspiration for idea:

This comic strip was inspired by my friend Kate making fun of my developing 'badger stripe' under lockdown, which she has named 'Badgery'.

    Process:

I spent a good while on the detailing of the hair following Eszter Szép's theory that the viewer mirrors the timing invested. I think Hockney has a similar contention somewhere...(?) It would be useful for the viewer to spent time on the hair as this key here for the 'funny' (or maybe not!). I think it would have funnier if the eyes were crossed in the final panel (although possibly not to the boss-eyed)...

  • The Moon is a house... (22 March 2020)

    PROCESS NOTES

    Inspiration for idea:

I was sitting in zazen (sitting meditation) for 5 minutes and started to think of a poem by Ikkyu Sojun. The poem turned into this little reflective drawing.

    ‘The Moon is a house
In which the mind is master
    Look very closely
    Only impermanence lasts
This floating world too, will pass’

I love this poem and sometimes even understand it.

    Process:

I drew this for a 5-minute drawing challenge that we were working on in Julia Elmore's online 'Creative Community' during lockdown.
